When I think of Hygge one thing that instantly comes to mind is candles. We use candles as one of the many different ways that help create the hygge feeling in our home. I particularly love to light candles at meal times on our dining table, coffee table and on our kitchen bench top. We also light candles when entertaining family and friends, or just enjoying moments together or even on my own.
Candles are a great starting point when introducing Hygge to your home. In Denmark and also in many other parts of Scandinavia, lighting a candle or candles is a common way to create a hygge atmosphere. The light that the candle illuminates, the warmth of the colour that it generates and the ambience, are all things that encourage hygge to take place. Candles create a feeling of cosiness and a homely warmth that makes us feel comfortable and at ease. Candles used don’t need to be fancy just lighting a simple tea light is often enough.
You can position a candle in the centre of a table at meal times, where everybody comes together or even while you are having a cup of tea or coffee. The candle will help mark the moment and define the space used. The candle should be position as a central point to create the hygge feeling or experience. Now let the conversations flow and enjoy hygge time. Relax and enjoy your hygge experience using candles.
Caution: Always be mindful when using candles as they are highly flammable. Practice safety when burning candles in your home.
