This week on the blog we talk about spending time with family and friends and how to make this a Hygge experience. In our home we regularly enjoy inviting our family and friends over to share lunch or dinner with us. Whether we are gathering to celebrate an occasion or just to catch up, we try to make this a special and memorable experience, because it is often when great memories are made and hygge moments are experienced. Opening your home to others and enjoying spending time with them is a very Hygge thing to do.
When you’re entertaining try to make your house feel more like a home by creating a warm and welcoming ambience. You can do this by introducing things like lighting tea lights, pillar candles and use cushions and throws as discussed in pervious blogs. When adding these elements to your rooms try to focus on areas where you think people may sit and chat to encourage a more relaxed and cosy space. People will naturally be drawn to these areas as they will feel inviting.
What better way to complete this experience than to incorporate sharing a meal together. Sharing a meal enables everybody to spend time together doing something we all do but enjoy so much more in good company. Preparing food makes everybody feel welcomed and it is such a nice way to entertain.
When thinking about what food to cook, seasons always play a part in this decision. Keep in mind that comfort food is always a good Hygge choice. Another popular way to entertain is to host a BBQ and this is a common choice in summer as weather permits for outdoor entertaining. As an Aussie I believe BBQ’ing is in our DNA, we all love our summer BBQ’s. In Scandinavia their eagerly anticipated summers are always well celebrated so the BBQ is also very popular there. Scandinavians use any excuse to get outside and enjoy the warmer weather as their winters are so cold and long. They transform their outdoor spaces into amazing areas to entertain and relax. I will touch on this in forthcoming blogs.
When the weather doesn’t permit and when the cold of winter sets in we all naturally venture indoors, gathering around a dining table for dinner with family and friends is one of the most hyggelig things you can do. When setting your table it’s important to add some special touches and incorporate things like candles, crockery, cutlery and glass wear, playing some soft music in the background also helps to set a great mood. All these little details will make people feel at ease, relaxed and welcomed in your home and as everybody get’s comfortable you will notice the conversations starts to flow more naturally, that’s when you know that Hygge time has begun.
Next time you gather for an occasion in your home try keeping in mind It’s the little things that make all the difference.
